Friends,
Thanks for making the effort to look into our ministry. Let me encourage you to get
to know some of my best friends and the most encouraging community I’ve ever experienced.
Since the early 90’s, SWAT’s college leaders have been the heart of this ministry. The
relationships built between our SWAT leaders and students clearly make the difference in
reaching these students with the truth of the Word. By God’s grace, we are privileged to
have the Lord provide some of the most passionate, talented, and humble leaders around.
God has genuinely blessed our leader application process with SWAT. All SWAT leaders are
screened before becoming a part of the ministry. First, an applicant must go through a very
thorough interview. If they are accepted, the student must attend our Ignite Orientation
weekend where veteran SWAT leaders take them through a typical SWAT weekend experience. After
completing Ignite, they serve under an older leader for their first weekend. We believe in
this process because we feel it not only helps our leaders know the standard set before them,
but also provides accountability for their walk with Christ.
On a more personal note, I want to share that it is humbling to be around these young people.
Our leaders exude passion for the life the Lord has for them. This passion flows out into all
areas of their life, not just their ministry with SWAT. They genuinely enjoy engaging with
God’s word and their love for students is energizing. They are always striving to serve the
Lord both on our weekends and in their lives with all of their heart, soul, mind, and
strength. It is humbling to witness what the Lord is doing in the hearts of these leaders.
If you are a youth leader and are considering hosting a SWAT weekend, please know that the
relationships between SWAT leaders and your students are what make the difference. Weekend
after weekend, students are impacted and matured in their relationships with Jesus Christ
through the testimony of these leaders. If you have any questions please contact us through
this website… and if you have time, let’s talk or grab some coffee (it’s a very spiritual
thing). God Bless!
Jon
SWAT Ministries began out of a country church outside of Athens, Georgia in the early 1990’s. Jon Messarra began using high school and college students to lead the students in his youth group. The dynamic of student leading student proved to be God’s desire when after four discipleship weekends the youth ministry grew from 16 to 200 students. This growth led other student pastors to request that Jon bring his student leaders to lead discipleship weekends for their churches. This led to Jon found SWAT Ministries, Inc (Student With a Testimony) in 1992.
Since 1992, we have been giving ourselves to churches across the country. We do this because there is a need for students to see older students joyfully living out their faith. Even though the mechanics of our SWAT weekends have changed over the years, the core has always been the relationships built between our leaders and the students on these weekends. (If you want a laugh, click the icon to the right to watch footage from a weekend in 1993. Don’t worry, our leaders no longer have mullets.)
Our mission is based on Matthew 28:19-20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” We simply desire to make disciples. With a large percentage of students leaving the church once entering college, we do not want to just provide another event. Instead of focusing on creating production-centered ministry, we desire to grow students up in their faith through relational small groups. Our SWAT leaders are grown up in their gifts and talents through their training and service on these weekends. Students from the churches we serve in are grown up through the time spent with the SWAT leader.
SWAT desires to continue to grow throughout the country. We currently have leaders in Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. As doors open, we will equip student leaders to lead discipleship weekends across the country. Our prayer is that the Lord would make Disciples of Christ through our ministry. We seek to connect all people associated with us to the source of true life through the spiritual disciplines. We pray that people associated with SWAT would grow into men and women who bring renewal and purpose to people around them.
The Vision of S.W.A.T. is to disciple this generation to Christian maturity through
every community in America. We will guide students in how to hear God through the
spiritual disciplines. This will, in turn, lead to serving and leading others to
Christ. Our mission through these principles is to connect students, ages 12-24,
to Jesus. This is accomplished by teaching biblical disciplines and building
intentional relationships utilizing college students as mentors during S.W.A.T.
ministry events.
